The concept informing the design of this project is bringing the forms in the artwork of the group of seven collection into the form of the building. This is done through curved CLT, and in the model, it is represented through curved forms cut on a laser cutter, then stacked to create the walls.
Secondary concepts deal with light and the existing site conditions. With gallery spaces being light-sensitive, light is brought into the building through a central atrium space. The atrium space acts both as a large light well and a space for circulation between floors and galleries. To accommodate for the existing pedestrian flow on the site, the corner of the building that is exposed to both sidewalks is removed, allowing for pedestrian flow around the building an an inviting entrance.
